The 1934 World Cup was held in Italy, which served as both host and champion. The Italian national team won its first title by beating Czechoslovakia 2–1 after extra time in the final in Rome. Sixteen teams competed in a straight knockout tournament. It was the second FIFA World Cup and the first staged in Europe, in 1934.
