GermanyThe 1954 World Cup was played in Switzerland and saw West Germany become champion for the first time. In the final at Bern's Wankdorf Stadium, the Germans came from behind to beat the mighty Hungary 3–2, in the feat known as the Miracle of Bern. Sixteen teams competed in a tournament remembered for its remarkably high number of goals. It was the fifth FIFA World Cup, in 1954.
