Belgium and Iran cancel each other out: 0-0 at SoFi Stadium
A goalless draw in Inglewood: VAR ruled out a Taremi goal and both sides are left on two points, trailing a surging Egypt.
Belgium and Iran played out a goalless draw (0-0) at Inglewood's SoFi Stadium, in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, in a second-round Group G match at the 2026 World Cup. The shared points leave both sides still waiting for a first win in the tournament.
It was a scrappy contest, short on clear chances and with the defences on top of the attacks at one of the most modern venues in the championship. The most controversial moment came in the 25th minute, when VAR ruled out a Mehdi Taremi goal that would have put Iran ahead; it was as close as either side came to breaking the deadlock.
The draw follows on from the opening round for both teams: Belgium had already drawn 1-1 with Egypt, while Iran had earned a 2-2 against New Zealand. With this latest share of the spoils, Belgium and Iran are on two points apiece and still chasing a first victory.
The result leaves Group G with Egypt out in front — top on four points after thrashing New Zealand — while Belgium and Iran share second place on two points and New Zealand sit bottom on one. Everything is still to be decided on the final matchday.
The group will close on 26 June with two decisive matches: Egypt-Iran at Seattle's Lumen Field and New Zealand-Belgium at Vancouver's BC Place. Belgium and Iran must win to seal their place in the last 16.
