Egypt beat New Zealand 3-1 to surge clear in Group G
Zizo, Salah and Trezeguet overturn Surman's opener in Vancouver to send the Pharaohs top of the group.
Egypt beat New Zealand 3-1 with authority at BC Place in Vancouver, under the Canadian stadium's retractable roof, in a second-round Group G match at the 2026 World Cup. The Pharaohs overturned the Kiwis' early opener and claimed their first win of the tournament to surge up the standings.
New Zealand sprang an early surprise: in the 15th minute, Finn Surman put the All Whites ahead and forced Egypt to play catch-up. But the Africans stepped up after the break and produced an overwhelming second half.
Zizo levelled in the 58th minute to set the comeback in motion, Mohamed Salah made it 1-2 in the 67th with a touch of class, and Trezeguet sealed the 1-3 in the 82nd, taking advantage of a fading New Zealand side that had no answer late on.
With the win, Egypt move on to four points and top Group G outright, ahead of Belgium and Iran — who had drawn goalless — on two, and a New Zealand side left on one and badly placed heading into the finale.
The group will close on 26 June: Egypt face Iran at Seattle's Lumen Field with a place in the last 16 within reach, while New Zealand fire their last shot against Belgium at Vancouver's BC Place.
