A Kylian Mbappé penalty on 70 minutes was all that separated a dominant France from a deep-lying, obdurate Paraguay. With his seventh goal, Mbappé draws level with Messi at the top of the scoring charts. Morocco await in the quarters.

France reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup with a win as hard-earned as it was deserved over Paraguay (1-0) at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. A Kylian Mbappé penalty on 70 minutes broke the resistance of an Albirroja that set up with a lockdown and came close to dragging the tie into extra time. Les Bleus dominated from start to finish, but needed patience and a spot-kick to bring down the Paraguayan wall.

Gustavo Alfaro, who had already caused a stir by knocking Germany out on penalties in the last 32, set Paraguay up in an ultra-defensive 5-4-1 with Orlando Gill in goal and Julio Enciso as the lone man up top. Didier Deschamps responded with his classic 4-2-3-1: Mike Maignan between the posts; a dependable back line of Koundé, Upamecano, Saliba and Digne; and a dream front three of Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise and Bradley Barcola behind Mbappé. The first half, however, finished goalless: Paraguay dropped deep in good order and France kept running into the Guaraní defensive web.

France's dominance was overwhelming —76% possession, 15 attempts and eleven corners against Paraguay's single shot on target— but they ran into an inspired Orlando Gill, who produced four fine saves to keep his side alive. The lock finally broke on 70 minutes: a move inside the box led to a penalty that Mbappé dispatched with his usual composure for 0-1. It was the goal France had deserved all night.

With the lead, Alfaro turned to his bench —Almirón, Gabriel Ávalos and others came on— in search of a grandstand finish, but Paraguay barely troubled Maignan: they ended the game with a meagre xG of 0.15 that laid bare their attacking impotence. Tellingly, the man-of-the-match award went not to Mbappé but to centre-back Dayot Upamecano (7.5), a sign of a game of resistance in which France ruled without shining and their defence gave nothing away.

The goal carries a double reward for Mbappé: his seventh of the tournament draws him level with Lionel Messi at the summit of the scoring chart, in a Golden Boot duel that promises to run to the final bullet. Paraguay, who had made all of South America dream after eliminating Germany, bow out with their heads held high. France, meanwhile, march on to the quarter-finals, where the Morocco side that thrashed Canada (3-0) earlier in the day awaits. This result brings the curtain down on the round-of-16 action of 4 July.
