Hosts that disappointed: South Africa 2010, the first eliminated in the group stage

Hosting is usually an advantage, but not always. South Africa 2010 and Qatar 2022 produced the earliest exits by a host nation.
Hosting a World Cup usually brings a notable advantage: home support, the comfort of playing at home and, often, good results. Six teams have even gone on to win the title as hosts. But history also holds resounding disappointments.
The most painful case is South Africa in 2010. Bafana Bafana became the first host nation in history to be eliminated in the group stage. And they were, despite a dignified finish: they beat France 2-1 in their final match, but goal difference left them out by the smallest of margins, in a bittersweet farewell before their own fans.
Twelve years later came another unwanted record. Qatar, in 2022, not only fell in the first round but lost all three of their matches, something no host had ever done. The dream debut turned into the earliest, most emphatic elimination for an organising country.
These stumbles contrast with the general rule: most hosts perform above expectations, driven by home advantage. The pressure of playing at home, however, is a double-edged sword that not everyone can handle.
In 2026, the three hosts —the United States, Mexico and Canada— face the challenge of rising to the occasion in front of their people. History reminds them that the crowd's affection motivates, but guarantees nothing.
