How the new 48-team format works
12 groups, best thirds and a brand-new Round of 32.
The tournament debuts the most ambitious format in its history: 48 teams split into 12 groups of four, labelled A to L. It is a major leap from the 32 sides of previous editions, which played in eight groups, and it forces a complete rethink of the competition's structure, the calendar and how matches are shared across the 16 venues.
The group stage keeps the round-robin system: each team plays three matches, one against every rival in its group. The change comes at qualification. The top two from each of the 12 groups — 24 teams — advance, joined by the eight best third-placed sides, to make up a total of 32 qualifiers.
That figure ushers in a round never before seen at a World Cup: the Round of 32. For the first time, the knockout bracket begins with 32 teams, adding an extra round before the last 16, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the grand final, set for the MetLife Stadium in the New York area.
The best-thirds mechanism is the trickiest part of the system. To decide which four of the twelve third-placed teams miss out, the criteria compared are points, goal difference, goals scored and further tie-breakers. That makes every goal potentially decisive, even for teams that have not managed to finish in the top two of their group.
The new layout lengthens the path to the title: the champions will play more matches than ever, demanding careful management of squads, travel and rest across an enormous territory. Squad depth gains importance in a longer and physically more demanding competition.
For fans, the expansion means more teams, more debutants and more matchdays with everything still to play for. The trade-off is a tournament that is harder to follow, where the qualification maths are not always obvious until the final group-stage matchday.
In short, the 48-team format rewards consistency and forces the favourites to stay switched on in every match, because a single slip can jeopardise not only top spot in the group but even a Round of 32 place via the best-thirds route.
