An unexpected slip for Spain on their World Cup debut. La Roja could only manage a 0-0 against a well-organised Cape Verde at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the modern arena with a capacity of around 68,200, the biggest upset of the matchday in Group H.
The Spanish side, one of the tournament's leading favourites, dominated possession from start to finish and monopolised the ball, but ran repeatedly into the Cape Verdean defensive block. The African side dropped back with discipline, shut down the central spaces and defended their box with exemplary organisation that ultimately frustrated a far more talented opponent.
La Roja created openings and sought the goal through every avenue, but lacked precision in the final pass and a clinical edge in front of goal. Cape Verde, far from simply defending, weathered the spells of pressure and broke dangerously on the counter at times, in a performance that makes their fans proud in a historic appearance for their football.
The goalless draw leaves a bitter taste for Spain and a hugely valuable point for Cape Verde. In a Group H that Spain entered as clear favourites alongside Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, the shared points completely reshuffle the predictions. On the same matchday, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay drew 1-1 at Miami Gardens' Hard Rock Stadium, leaving the group with four very evenly matched teams after the first round.
The stumble leaves Spain needing to react quickly. The 48-team system offers a wider margin — even third place can be enough to advance — but dropping points against theoretically weaker opponents complicates the maths and ramps up the pressure heading into the next fixtures.
Beyond the result, the game offered a recurring lesson from major tournaments: the gap between reputation and reality narrows when an opponent defends with organisation and conviction. Spain will need to sharpen their finishing if they are not to see a group that looked straightforward become difficult.
La Roja will soon get the chance to make amends, again in Atlanta, against Saudi Arabia. A test they will be obliged to win to avoid jeopardising qualification and to restore confidence after a disappointing opener.
