Some goals are remembered for what they were worth and others for how they were scored. These belong to the second kind: works of art that outlive the result.

A World Cup leaves champions, but it also leaves images. And some of those images are goals so beautiful they are remembered long after no one can recall how the match ended.

The most cited of them all barely needs an introduction. In the 1970 final, Brazil crowned a move of some twenty passes with a backheel from Pelé and a final lash from Carlos Alberto, the captain, arriving at full tilt from deep. That 4-1 win over Italy is still studied as the perfect team goal.

Sixteen years later, in the same country, Manuel Negrete scored for Mexico one of the most graceful strikes on record: an acrobatic scissor kick against Bulgaria at the 1986 World Cup, a reminder of why the bicycle kick is the move every fan dreams of seeing.

There is beauty in subtlety too. Dennis Bergkamp's impossible control against Argentina in 1998 —a touch, a turn and a three-part finish— fits into a single breath. And there is beauty in collective patience: in 2006, Argentina strung together twenty-four passes against Serbia and Montenegro for Esteban Cambiasso to almost sheepishly tap in.

The 21st century has added its own postcards. Robin van Persie's diving header against Spain in 2014, flying parallel to the turf, and James Rodríguez's chest-and-volley at that same tournament —voted the year's best goal— prove the repertoire is far from exhausted.

Each of these goals won, deep down, the same competition: the one for staying in the memory. In 2026, at some stadium in North America, someone will try to sneak onto this list without even knowing it.
