Brazil's yellow was born of a trauma, the Dutch Orange defined an era and Croatia's checkerboard is unmistakable. The story of the kits that became legend.

A shirt can become the symbol of an entire footballing nation. Some World Cup kits have transcended sport to become cultural icons recognisable anywhere on the planet.

The most famous case is Brazil's yellow, and few know it was born of a trauma. Until 1950, the Seleção played in white, but after the «Maracanazo» that colour was cursed. A design contest produced in 1953 the yellow shirt with green trim and blue shorts, unveiled shortly after and enshrined as a legend with the titles of 1958 and, above all, 1970.

Another mythical kit is the Orange of the Netherlands. The colour of the House of Orange clothed Cruyff's revolutionary «Total Football» side in 1974 and, ever since, a stadium bathed in orange is one of the most recognisable images of any World Cup.

Creativity has its place too. Croatia's red-and-white checkerboard, inspired by their national crest, has been unmistakable since their breakthrough in 1998. And in the chapter of eccentricities, no one topped Mexican goalkeeper Jorge Campos, who in the 1990s designed his own shirts with garish patterns and impossible colours.

From the sobriety of Italy's azzurra to Argentina's striped albiceleste, shirts are the skin of national teams. In 2026, every side will take the field in its own, laden with history and identity.
