The United States got the job done at home, beating Australia 2-0 at Seattle's Lumen Field for a solid Group D opener at the 2026 World Cup. The hosts took control early: in the 11th minute, an unfortunate Cameron Burgess own goal put them ahead, and right before the break, in the 44th, Alexander Freeman sealed it with a second to leave the Socceroos with a mountain to climb.
It was a niggly affair, with the referee handing out cards to both sides. Australia were booked through Jordan Bos (16), Alessandro Circati (32) and, in a heated finale, Harry Souttar and Jacob Italiano (both in the 89th). The U.S. were not spared either: Antonee Robinson (56), Folarin Balogun (89) and Chris Richards (90) all picked up yellows in a foul-heavy game with few clear chances after the second goal.
Lumen Field, one of the loudest stadiums in North America and the familiar home of Seattle's soccer fervour, was a cauldron with all 66,925 seats roaring on the Stars and Stripes. The Pacific Northwest host city soaked up its team's debut at a ground famous for its deafening atmosphere.
Mauricio Pochettino opted for a 3-5-2 with Matthew Freese in goal, Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie anchoring midfield, and a Balogun-Ricardo Pepi strike pairing. Tony Popovic answered with a defensive 5-4-1, Patrick Beach in goal and Mohamed Touré the lone man up top, a cautious plan that the early goal ultimately undid.
In the Group D standings, the three points put the United States in an ideal spot in the race for top spot and qualification at this 48-team 2026 World Cup, while Australia must respond quickly if they are to avoid trouble in reaching the next round.
